Submental Liposuction, or liposuction of the chin and neck, has emerged as one of the most popular liposuction procedures in contemporary facial plastic surgery. It is no secret that the neck region is one of the first to succomb to the aging process, and submental liposuction is a quick, minimally invasive procedure that provides patients with a more contoured neck and jaw without having to undergo a larger procedure. Sagging of the neck and jowles occurs independently of more general weight gain and is made even more apparent as the neck skin loses elasticity. Dr. Yang uses submental liposuction to correct the effects of gravity on the neck and jowls often in addition to a facelift, necklift, or chin implant.
The best candidates for submental liposuction are patients who are experiencing a sagging neckline (turkey wattle) but still have good skin elasticity so that the skin is able to “snap” back into place upon removal of the excess fat. Similarly, patients undergoing a necklift and/or facelift may be a candidate for the procedure if their neck skin is being weighed down by excess fat. Patients electing for chin implant surgery also elect to have submental liposuction simultaneously to augment the results of their implant surgery and further define their jawline.
Submental Liposuction Procedure
For patients who are undergoing another procedure in addition to submental liposuction, the procedures are done simulataneously. However, for those patients who wish to undergo submental liposuction only, the procedure is quick and done under local anesthesia in the office. Dr. Yang first locates the areas the patient wants the most fat removed and the greatest definition. The lipsuction instrument is positioned under the skin via a small incision made underneath the chin. The procedure only takes 45 minutes and sutures are removed a week after the surgery.
After surgery, there is mild discomfort and patients can generally return to normal activities within 2-3 weeks. If the procedure was done in conjunction with another procedure, that amount of time will depend on the invasiveness of the additional procedures.
